Colonel Smithers was a senior executive of the Bank of England who assisted the MI6 in investigating Auric Goldfinger's gold smuggling operations. Smithers told Bond and M of smuggling methods, and that it was of concern to the Bank of England that the value of gold would fall. He loaned MI6 a gold bar worth £5,000, a rare specimen owned by the Nazi's during World War 2, perfect for Bond to use as bait on Goldfinger.
