saten
Take them down.
151. int. elevator -
day
Bond, Catherine, Hunter
and two GUARDS stand in the elevator as it descends. The doors
phase open.
152. int. subway tunnel
- day
Bond and Catherine
are forced on to a gangway. The sound of distant
rumbling, growing louder, makes Bond turn.
SUBWAY
TUNNEL - BOND'S POV
as
the four lights - - amber and white markers over white sealed
beam headlights - - come into view and an SUBWAY train roars past
them.
They
climb down on to the roadbed and start walking through the darkened
tunnel.
They
eventually come to
A
METAL ACCESS PANEL
Hunter
crouches, squeezes through the opening. Guard #1 pushes Bond through.
The others follow.
153.
INT. DISUSED TUNNEL
Someone
has been working here. Bond enters a brick-walled passage - pipes
overhead, naked bulbs. The lighting, though dim, is incandescent.
hunter
This
is it.
Hunter
sets a box on the ground. He opens it to reveal a BOMB. The mechanism
inside is highly sophisticated. He keys in a numeric pattern and
a red light appears.
hunter
It is
primed.
He
turns, looks at Bond, then looks at Guard #2.
hunter
Give
me Mr.Bond’s gun.
Guard
#2 hands Hunter Bond’s Walther P99. Hunter turns, stares at Catherine.
hunter
Curiosity
killed the Cat.
Bond
puts his hand to his wrist as Hunter raises the gun.
CLOSE
ON BOND’S WATCH
as
he turns the outer casing anti-clockwise. Taps the ninth hour
three times.
CLOSE
ON THE WALTHER
as
it heats up instantly. Hunter screams, dropping the gun.
Bond
spins, smashes GUARD #1 in the stomach, grabs his machine gun.
Catherine kicks out, sends GUARD #2 flying. Bond turns,
breaks GUARD #1’s neck - - spins him between himself and GUARD
#2 - - who then hesitates to fire - - giving Bond the split second
he needs to blow him away.
Hunter
lunges, slashes Bond’s arm with a knife as
Bond turns to shoot him. Hunter sees a chance to escape and bursts
forward, quickly side-stepping and disappearing through a steel
door.
bond
I’m
going after him. He still has the trigger for the bomb. Contact
M.
She
nods as Bond picks up his Walther and rushes to the steel door.
He pauses - then elbows the door aside, aiming his gun down.
Moving
low, his arms out, swiveling his gun, Bond moves in to
AN
EMPTY STAIRWELL
brightly
lit.
He
is in the well of an emergency exit, beside a metal ladder that
leads up through a grate and out onto the street.
He
feels his arm, then looks at his hands. Blood.
Seeing
another access panel he moves forward.
154.
INT. TUNNEL
He
peers into the passage. Sees Hunter, in the shadows, aiming a
machine gun . . .
Bond
jerks back as a HAIL OF BULLETS are fired hitting . . .
ABOVE
a
bulb that smashes into a thousand pieces.
Bond
crouches down in the dirt, takes aim . . .
Too
late as he sees Hunter run up a fire escape as ANOTHER BLAST comes
from nowhere.
Bond
sprints. FOLLOWS him, tearing ass . . .
DOWN
THE PASSAGEWAY
as
he reaches the fire escape, makes the turn, full speed ahead,
bringing his gun up.
ABOVE
we
can hear the slamming of a metal door.
Bond
scrambles up the fire escape, reaches the top where there is
A
FIRE ESCAPE EXIT
and
he tries the door. Something holds it. Bond aims his gun and blows
the door handle to pieces. He tears the door open and light floods
in.
Bond
steps through the door and is very surprised to find himself on
. . .
155.
INT. ANOTHER PLATFORM
He
is on a different level. He sees Hunter running down the stairs.
156.
INT. PLATFORM
Bond
tears down the stairs, yelling for people to get out of the way.
BOND
Get down. Get down now!
People
run upon seeing his gun.
Bond
comes to a halt, his face focused, eyes scanning the crowd of
passengers that line the platform.
At
the far end of the platform, he sees Hunter running, knocking
people down as he goes.
Bond
aims, can’t get a clean shot because of all the people.
Hunter
turns, raises the machine gun and FIRES, spraying the crowd with
bullets. Some innocent by-standers get shot as Bond throws himself
to the ground as a train enters the station.
MOVING
ANGLE
with
the head car as it stops, it's breaks sighing, and a pair of electric
doors in the
EXTREME
FOREGROUND, phase open.
BOND'S
POV
as we move forward
with him, along the platform, then TURN as he watches a huge amount
of people surge on to the train to escape the fire.
Bond
looks to where Hunter was standing, he is gone. Something registers
-
THE
TRAIN!
He
scrambles to his feet and . . .
157. INT. train CAR 4
makes
it to the car just as the doors close, holding them back until
he's squeezed through. The train gradually begins to move, eventually
speeding through the tunnel. He heads for the rear of the car,
as if taking up position, leaning his back against the storm door.
Bond surveys the car.
158.
INT. TRAIN CAR 9
Passengers
are either distracted from their reading or talking, or aroused
from their limbo of subway dead-headedness.
They
register different degrees of interest, surprise and upon seeing
Hunter with a machine gun in his hand - panic. There are some
sixteen of them. Six men and ten women.
A woman screams.
There
is immediate silence as he looks around. A terrified silence.
159. INT. TRAIN CAR 7
Bond
has made his way through most of the train, walking slowly, surveying
the passengers on both sides of the aisle as he goes. They look
back at him.
Bond
is covered in blood from his arm. It’s not a pretty sight.
SHOOTING
THROUGH the window as the train enters another station. We flash
by the "rear-enders" ( those waiting for the last car
) and gradually slow until we stop. The doors phase open.
Bond
leans forward out of the train, slowly, searching, gun up.
He
looks two cars up. Sees Hunter staring back, aiming his machine
gun straight at him.
Bond
jerks back as more shots are FIRED, the bullets whizzing past,
the gunshots echoing.
The
waiting passengers standing on the platform flee in terror at
the sight of two guns blazing, as Bond returns fire. Bond has
to quickly pull back, as the doors phase shut. The train starts
moving. It’s just picking up speed when . . .
Bond’s
finger presses the emergency brake, everyone is thrown forward,
as the SUBWAY train decelerates quickly and finally stops in the
tunnel - - and there is complete silence.
Crouching,
he makes his way to the next car along.
The
fluorescent lights suddenly go out. It all happens very quickly.
He has fired on the main electrical circuit.
CLOSE
ON
his
hand as Bond presses the button. The access door to the next car
HISSES open. The emergency, incandescent bulbs immediately go
on, thereby diminishing the brightness in the car by half.
Hunter
is suddenly there in front of him, as he looks around. They both
level their guns. The two of them are at close range stand-off.
Hunter lowers his gun, raises his other hand sharply. Bond sees
the detonator in his hand.
bond
The
blast will kill you as well.
Suddenly,
Hunter lunges at Bond, yelling. He grabs his hand, Bond’s gun
swaying as they struggle.
A
SHOT goes off, this time blowing through the window, hitting the
glass, which SMASHES into a thousand pieces all over the floor.
Everyone is ducking and screaming.
Hunter
punches Bond to the ground, runs, steps up and hurls his body
head first through the broken glass window.
The
window is almost completely out - - only a few pieces of glass
cling to the frame.
Bond
gets up, collects his gun and uses the barrel to scrape around
the edges, clearing away the last traces of glass. He climbs up
and throws his body out of the window. The other passengers stare
after him.
160.
INT. TUNNEL
Bond
lands hard into the twin tunnel, rolling over, raises himself
on one elbow and shakes his head. He wipes some blood off his
face and looks at his fingers. The skin ripped, torn flesh. He
picks himself up, stepping on to the roadbed, his shoes crunching
on broken glass.
Bond
turns, sees Hunter running through the tunnel, breathing hard.
Bond gives chase. It’s like a relentless battle to see who will
survive.
161.
INT. PLATFORM EDGE
Bond
appears from within the tunnel, reaches a railing at the platform’s
edge. He jerks back as another series of shots are FIRED and the
railing near him splinters into a million pieces. Bond continues
to run after him.
162.
INT. SUBWAY STATION
Bond
charges along the platform. Several people are running, heading
in different directions. He bashes through a security barrier.
Goes
down the steps. Makes a turn, full speed ahead, bringing his gun
up, as suddenly more SHOTS whiz past him. A paper booth window
shatters and he pulls back.
Bond
leans forward to catch a GLIMPSE of Hunter just as he disappears
down an escalator.
He
runs, gun in hand. He’s at the top of the escalator. Sees him
below. People are screaming as he tears past them. He is nearly
at the bottom.
Bond
vaults the rail, his body crashing on to the metal centre ramp
between the two escalators.
He
falls to one knee, slides down it, bringing his Walther up and
pointing it in one direction.
Hunter
turns, glances above. Sees Bond coming down the centre rail between
the ascending and descending escalators like a bullet. He DISAPPEARS.
Bond slides off the
rail, hits the floor hard. He gets up, vaults the pay booth, takes
an exit into a shopping mall.
163. INT. MALL - DAY
Bond sees Hunter sprinting
away, through shocked shoppers.
Bond is trying for
a shot, but there are too many people in the line of fire and
Hunter knows it, smiling as he escapes. But Bond is not about
to give up and takes off after him. This chase is still on.
Hunter is fast and
vicious. He hurls people out of the way, sending shoppers sprawling.
Bond is ruthless in his pursuit.
Hunter spins, sees
a
MOTORBIKE DISPLAY
and a SALESMAN doing
a presentation.
Hunter runs at him,
pulling him off a bike. He takes hold of the motorbike, a Yamaha
V-MAX and leaps on. He pops the clutch and takes off.
Bond grabs another
bike, jumps on.
salesman
You can’t do this. I’m
responsible for these bikes!!
bond
I have insurance. Trust
me.
Bond smiles at him
as he GUNS the bike and gives chase.
Hunter shoots through
the mall, screaming at shoppers, who fall to the ground. He heads
straight for a GLASS WINDOW.
Bond watches as he
SMASHES through it and hits the street.
164. EXT. STREET - day
Bond’s bike hits the
street and goes straight into the traffic. A car screeches, not
stopping in time... as Bond’s bike flies over the hood. The driver
ducks as the wheels of Bond’s bike crack the windshield.
Bond lands, sees Hunter
taking his bike into Central Park.
165. EXT. central PARK
- day
Hunter roars through
the park on the Yamaha. He looks back, amazed to see Bond gaining
on him. They scatter joggers and bicyclists, people walking their
dogs.
TRACKING WITH THEM
as they rocket through the park.
Hunter goes straight
through the trees. Bond speeds through some roller-bladers who
go sprawling. Hunter fires his machine gun straight back at Bond,
emptying it. He drops the machine gun and crouches over the bike,
twisting the last bit of throttle out of it. They are going flat
out, through the trees, in a kinetic blur.
166. EXT. PARK/ STREETS
- day
Hunter explodes through
the bushes and out onto the street.
Cars skid around him,
out of control. He turns south. Weaving through traffic. Bond’s
bike flies into the air and lands behind Hunter among the spun-out
cars.
167. ext. street - day
Up ahead traffic is
stopped, jammed tight at a light. Hunter goes into the oncoming
traffic lanes, which are empty. Bond’s bike slides around the
corner in a blare of horns and comes barrelling down the street
toward him. Hunter pulls to the side of the street, locks up the
brakes and the bike slides to a stop.
He is outside the
Saten building. He gets off the bike, runs inside.
Bond slides to a halt,
pops the clutch and wheels his bike around. He jumps the curb
and goes straight through the glass entrance of the Saten building.
168. INT. saten technology
- lobby - day
As Bond skids into
the lobby, a GUARD appears. Bond FIRES as the bike slides out
from under him. The guard is dead before he hits the floor.
Bond sees - - the
GLASS ELEVATORS. The door is just closing on one of them. He catches
a glimpse of Hunter as the doors close.
Bond rushes for the
second elevator. He punches a button, a beat, doors open.
169. INT. SCENIC ELEVATOR
- day
Bond is in A GLASS
ELEVATOR as it rises, right to the top of the building. Suddenly,
it comes to a stop. The doors begin to open. Bond raises his gun.
Standing before him is Catherine.
bond
For Christ’s sake I could’ve
killed you!!
She smiles.
catherine
I think it’s the other
way around, don’t you?
She looks down. Bond
looks down at her hands.
BOND’S POV
A MACHINE GUN pointing
at his crotch.
bond
Mmmm. I see your point.
She gets into the
elevator, hits the button. It ascends.
170. INT. / EXT. helipad
– day
The helipad has a
spectacular view of New York City. The doors part and Bond comes
out, with his Walther poised and ready. He sees Hunter taking
off in one of Saten’s helicopters.
A beautiful jet black
helicopter fully gunned. Catherine is already making ground, Bond
beside her.
bond
Do you mind telling me
what you’re doing?
She turns, smiles.
catherine
I told you. This time
I do the driving.
She
is in the cockpit. Bond climbs up.
171. int. cockpit – day
The helicopter’s dash
glows dimly as Catherine powers up.
bond
As much as I love women
drivers, do you mind if I take her up, 008?
Catherine stares at
the dash. Directly in front of the stick, two CRT screens display
data. The bottom screen shows a radar sweep. The cockpit is filled
with computers and video screens. This is clearly a high tech
piece of equipment.
catherine
Be my guest, 007.
Bond looks at her,

As the missile is
just about to hit, Bond’s helicopter flies over the rooftop of
a skyscraper and releases a burst of flames that cover the roof.
The helicopter dives
into a hard left. The missile tracks the heat of the flames and
hits the roof,
EXPLODING ON IMPACT.
181. EXT. SKY - DAY
The two helicopters
circle each other, going in opposite directions. As they jockey
for position, they snap past each other like the ends of bullwhips.
The earth spins, the
horizon appears and disappears as the two helicopter’s both dive
toward the street below.
182. ext. street - day
The street is jammed
with cars. Honking horns echo up the glass canyons as Bond’s
helicopter and Hunter’s come hurtling down and fly over them firing
a hail of bullets.

Bond jerks the stick
left, and the helicopter takes an astonishing turn on it’s side

Alarm bells sound.
computer
Laser lock.
194. ext. sky – day
Bond’s helicopter

helicopter.
195. ext. skyscraper
– day
The laser hits the
skyscraper and one of the giant windows begins to spider- crack.
FLAMES ERUPT
inside and there is
a tremendous EXPLOSION.
Bond’s helicopter
flies straight through the hole in the skyscraper, right through
the fire ball and out of the other side.
He rockets toward
space. The helicopter flies like a bullet, obeying the laws of
physics, not Bond's touch on the control surface.
Hunter’s helicopter
breaks out of the cloud of smoke and fire.
196. int. hunter’s helicopter
- day
Hunter looks around,
startled. There is nothing. No helicopter, no Bond. He scans the
sky frantically. He looks to his left, to his right and just behind
him. Nothing. He flies over the Hudson River.
197. ext. sky – day
Hunter’s helicopter
is the only one we see for the moment. Then out of nowhere, Bond’s
helicopter appears above Hunter, descending rapidly.
Bond is climbing out
on to the skids as Catherine holds the helicopter steady.
Bond hooks one arm
and one leg over the skid and hangs down as low as he can. His
body is only a few feet away from the rotating blades of Hunter’s
helicopter.
Then in one of the
most fantastic sights you will ever see, Hunter’s helicopter banks
to the right and in that split second, Bond drops.
198. ext. hunter’s helicopter

– day
The bolt SMASHES through
the crown, locks into position. The wire is recalled and as Bond
travels up Liberty’s body, the helicopter falls past him.
It hits first with
an enormous explosion of water, then the shell EXPLODES AND SHATTERS
into a million pieces.
201. ext. liberty’s crown
– day
Hunter pulls Bond
up on to the crown. He forces him to his knees, holds the detonator
to his face.
hunter
Watch a few thousand
people die.
Suddenly, an explosion
of sound. It rises like an avenging angel. Bond’s helicopter crests
the edge of the crown. We see Catherine in the cockpit, the helicopter
hovering, shattering the air with turbo-throb, sandblasting Hunter.
This gives Bond the
element of surprise as he spins, grabs Hunter’s hands and forces
them down.
Hunter attempts to
hit the detonation button but is distracted by the fact that Bond
is for some reason smiling.
Bond encourages him
to look down.
HUNTER’S POV
A RED DOT
on his chest.
bond
Burn
in hell.
Hunter
screams as Catherine fires the helicopters laser at his body.
Bond pulls the detonator from his hands just in time as his burning
body falls to the ground below.
bond
Embarrassment
to Scotland.
Bond collapses, completely
exhausted. The survival has been almost without thinking: an instinctual
physical and hard struggle.
bond
William Saten. Time for you to
die.
