James Bond is sent on his most dangerous mission
where he has to undergo painful plastic surgery
and take on the identity of a Bosnian Warlord,
to save the life of a captured high-ranking NATO
official. But behind the scenes the stifling political
bureaucracy within British Intelligence fatally
compromises Bond’s assignment.
Extract
The jeep suddenly lurched, as if the chassis had
snapped. Bond clung to the steering wheel to steady
himself, his ears filled with a terrible, strained
cracking noise.
A black, crooked line, like a tree growing in
hideous fast motion, moved away across the ice.
Branches grew from it. The jeep lurched again,
this time the other way, and settled unsurely.
Other black trees grew out across the ice around
and behind him.
Horrified, he looked over the body of the jeep.
He could see water behind and in front of him.
Huge jagged plates and slabs of ice bobbed and
rubbed one another around the jeep, which now floated
on its chassis, buoyed up momentarily. Bond knew
that as soon as the water reached the engine, the
jeep would sink steadily into the lake.
