Aris Kristatos
(Julian Glover)

Character: Aris Kristatos
Actor: Julian Glover
Movie: For Your Eyes Only
Age: Mid 50's
Appearence: Grey balding hair, grey/green eyes, short grey beard, a welcoming man with a smile that ides a cool calculating nature.
Status: Terminated

Perhaps one of the most sly of all Bond villains, Kristatos attempts not only to sell NATO's ATAC to the Soviets, but to get Bond to kill his competitor and long-time adversary, Columbo. Appearing in For Your Eyes Only, Kristatos is a smuggler and a thief with no scruples and a score of hired killers led by Emile Locque. He has a poor sense of honour, having gained a medal from the British during the war while he was actually serving as a double agent. His only redeeming feature is his concern for his hot-headed, ice skating protoge, Bibi Dahl.

Most memorable quote:
"You cannot just arrest him, you must find a different way. You may have to kill him."

Personality

Kristatos is a devious and intelligent criminal with an absence of scruples, as he uses his friends and enemies alike against one another. Involved in smuggling and theft he employs a number of hired killers to do his dirty work. Although giving the appearance of a cultured gentleman he has no sense of honour, having gained a medal from the British during the Second World War for his profitless actions, while he was actually serving as a double agent and making a good profit on wartime supplies. The only irregularity in his otherwise devious and calculating personality is his concern for the hot-headed, ice skating protege, Bibi Dahl.

Scheme

Kristatos is introduced to Bond by Ferrara as an ally, by nature of his antagonism to his competitor and long-time adversary, Columbo and as the wealthy patron of an Olympic ice-skater, Bibi. Kristatos is however, secretly working for the Soviets, smuggling heroin and attempting to recover NATO's ATAC, a nuclear decoding device, from the sunken St. Georges. Kristatos uses Bond in an attempt to end his blood feud with Columbo by implicating Columbo in drug smuggling and implying that Bond's best course of action would be to kill Columbo. Kristatos then takes the ATAC from Bond and attempts to sell it to the Soviets. Bond enlists the support of Columbo and with a small team of men and Melina Havelock, who is seeking revenge for the death of her parents, enters Kristatos' mountain fortress, St. Cyril's. Columbo finally achieves retribution for his betrayal and kills Kristatos before he can make contact with the Soviets.

Headquarters

High atop the Meteora in Greece sits St. Cyril's monastery, previously used by both Kristatos and Columbo during the war, Kristatos flees there with the ATAC to await the arrival of General Gogol to collect the device and relocate Kristatos, Kriegler, Bibi and her training to the Soviet Union. With access afforded only by a single mechanical basket lift and despite the obvious lack of modern deterrents, direct attack on St. Cyril's is dangerous and foreboding.
